... from creating something is the pleasure you have in doing it, not the final product even. Berenice Abbott
I thought about this when I printed this month's "print of the month" for a reason you will understand a paragraph or so later.

A few years ago (actually a LOT of years ago) I was a very junior member of a posse of nutcases that was reassembling and restoring a mid-19th century tracker-action pipe organ for our church. I joined this distinguished group when it had done a good deal of the preliminary work. We were hampered by the fact that only one of us had even a vague clue of how a vintage pipe organ works.
Against all odds we succeeded! Alas I did not take nearly enough photographs and most of the few I did take were at the time we were almost done nearly a year later. I hustled this sweet-faced young woman to come and play the barely functional instrument while I photographed our proud handiwork.
Apart from being played by the church's music director (who had played it as a youth in its former home) we had a concert performed by an noted local organist.
Now why the Berenice Abbott quotation -- less than a year later it and the entire building were destroyed in a fire originating in the kitchen.
If you are interested in more details and a few more photographs, email me, ronfstop@mindspring.com and I'll send you a pdf.

And on a lighter keyboard note -- Johnny Hahn and his abbreviated piano on wheels was (maybe still is) a fixture of the Pike Place Market for over 40 years. He wrote a lot of his own music and (obviously) had strong political opinions. He and I shared a sort of a shared "You are still here?" greeting.
