I love street fairs, carnivals, festivals — any kind of large,
cheerful crowd with lots of music,
art and dancing. This project began (actually with “Ecstatic
Dancers #2”) when I realized
that people who really enjoy dancing often enter a kind of altered
state. The music and
the motion of their bodies take them to another place.
The rest of the world ceases to matter very much.
When I am photographing dancers I try to become part of the dance
— and often do — so that photographing becomes
a collaboration between me and my subject.
I see the same faces year after year, place after place.
To my pleasure I have met and talked to many of these dancers and
have sent prints to them.
