A semaphore dangles its arms

beside rusted tracks. Inside the neat station

no one sleeps, fidgets, waits for a train

whose conductor reads a strange alphabet

with three new symbols: error, front, break.

Numerals one through nine, then zero:

the same as A through J.

The semaphore at Metamora station was

used until the rail line was abandoned.
