Pride Parade
Seattle's Gay
Pride Parade is, I'm told, one of the nation's largest
such
observances. It is held in late June in Seattle's Capitol Hill
neighborhood; on
Broadway and ending at Volunteer Park.
It is an amalgam
of civil rights rally, goofy neighborhood parade
and Carnival in
Rio. I have never been at an event at which
the participants
take the issues so seriously … and themselves so lightly.
The spectators
range from supportive and delighted (many, including me)
to puzzled to
hostile (only a few and I don't photograph them).
These
photographs are from the 2003 and 2004 Pride Parades. The
entire project,
which is ongoing, now includes 22 prints.
